Is it safe to drive a 4x4 in 4wd while the spooned on the rear axel are stripped?

My splines are stripped on the rear axel of my 85 jeep cj7 renegade. Would it be fine if I put it in 4wd, to engage the front axel, and drove it up to the shop? It's 30-40 miles max. What things can go wrong?
